Pandora On-The-Go

Back to Nick's Reviews

I'm sure you've heard of The Pandora Project. You create a "radio station" by picking a performer or group or genre of music in which you're interested, and The Pandora Project will find you music that's similar to play through that "station." It's very nifty, and you get to hear a lot of music you'd often not be exposed to, but that you'll probably like.

Of course, I'm not at my computer all day (shocking, I know), which can sort of reduce the usefulness of The Pandora Project as an every day, everywhere thing. Luckily, the folk at Pandora have thought of that, and have an ingenious answer. Thanks to Pandora On-The-Go, I can take my music with me on my AT&T or Sprint cell phone! And my favorite part is that both my computer and my cell phone are pulling from the same database. So no matter where I add a music type, it shows up in both places!

Pandora On-the-Go menu

It's really simple. Just pick a group, genre, song, whatever from the menu, and Pandora creates a "radio station" based on your selection, and then sends you the music. I am not the world's greatest texter, and I certainly would never do it while driving, so I didn't test creating a "radio station" while on the cell phone. Works great, and, on my Motorola Razr, it sounds much, much better than I thought it would.

What also works much, much better than I thought it would was the signal. Driving to and from work every day, driving all over town on Christmas errands, and driving out to my father-in-law's (who lives approximately an hour shy of nowhere) certainly tested the signal. I never once lost it. Never skipped a beat or dropped a note. I was very impressed. Of course, the thing you shouldn't do while your driving is vote.

Pandora Voting

Vote? Yes! Let's face it, not everybody likes every song, even by their favorite artists. You can easily vote a song up or down. Just click the appropriate thumbs-up or thumbs-down button - again, not while driving - and Pandora will "learn" what you like and dislike. Nifty! And, again, since the central database s on the Internet, the stuff you vote up and down at one device is remembered at the other device. All in all, a very cool product. If you're into music, and like discovering new music, and like your music everywhere, then the product for you is Pandora On-the-Go. Right now, it's solely for AT&T and Sprint phones, so if you're a customer, give it a try; you'll truly enjoy it!
