Animusic - computer animated music

Back to Nick's Reviews

Every once in a while, something comes from so far out of left field, you have no idea what to make of it. This product, Animusic - Computer Animated Music, is one of those things. I wasn't at all sure what I was going to be exposed to, and I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but I was willing to review it.

WOW! This is a great DVD! (actually, there are two of them - so far - and each is just as terrific as the other) This is a serious example of high-tech art. The basic idea is that they've taken some original jazz, and matched it to state-of-the-art photo-realistic computer animation. No funny animals or fish or ogres here; all of the "characters" are actually instruments. Some of them play themselves:

Animusic: Stick Figures

Some of them are pure Rube Goldberg:

Animusic: Drum Machine

All of them are imaginative and fascinating. And just plain cool. There's a lot of attention to detail, too. Take a look at the drums - there are worn spots in the drum heads where the sticks strike them! All of the movements are truly matched to the music. This is clearly a labor of love.

I had this playing in the background of a party I gave, but I had to stop it. Although the music is excellent, I had a whole party full of people crowded around the television watching the video! All of those people have come over to watch the videos all the way through. Multiple times. While I love seeing my friends regularly, I'd like to have them come over to actually see me...

I guess I'll have to start giving these things as gifts. The Animusic folk make it easy to buy them directly from their Web site or from Best Buy or CompUSA. Each video is only $19.95; a combo pack of the two is only $34.71 on the Web site. If they had XXXL shirts, I'd buy a couple of those, too!

Seriously, this is so imaginative, so much fun, and so fascinating, I can't imagine you wouldn't want to watch these videos over and over. Check out the samples on their Web site and see if you're not hooked, too.

I'll bet you are!
